Simple pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. The illness occurs when too much fluid collects in the pleural space (the space between the two layers of the pleura membranes that surround the lungs). It is commonly known as "water on the lungs." It is characterized by shortness of breath, chest pain, gastric discomfort (dyspepsia), and cough. Most cases of pneumonia can be treated without hospitalization. Typically, oral antibiotics, rest, fluids, and home care are sufficient for complete resolution. However, people with pneumonia who are having trouble breathing, people with other medical problems, and the elderly may need more advanced treatment. If symptoms worsen, patient may needs to be hospitalized.
