Frequently Asked Questions
It's hard to find low cost surgery, but you do have a few options.
First, you should seek out a second opinion from a doctor who will not be involved in the surgery. Although the second doctor will often agree with the first, you should generally seek out a second opinion before receiving any major medical treatment. If the second doctor agrees with the first, you know you need the surgery. If they disagree, you might ask for a third opinion. Although getting all of these additional opinions can be costly, they will cost far less than unnecessary surgery.
You cannot count on being able to find charity care, but hospitals typically designate a certain percentage of cases as charity cases every year. Ask a hospital representative for information about how to apply for charity care. If you've already received treatment and have a bill you cannot afford, you can still ask the hospital about the possibility of applying to have your case designated as a charitable case retroactively.
You may also be able to find good care at a cheaper price in another country as a hospital stay elsewhere might cost a small fraction of what it costs in the United States. As such, a growing number of patients have begun to seek out care in Costa Rica, Thailand, and other countries with well-trained physicians who work below American rates.
Some American companies specialize in arranging vacations that include medical treatment at pre-certified hospitals. Before leaving the country, make sure to check the credentials and qualifications of anyone who will treat you.
